Women think of all the colours except the absence of colour and we call that White. White is the lightest colour and is achromatic; it is the clean slate which marks new successful beginnings. White can take any form, blend into any colour and give it life. It is associated with light, goodness, safety, peace, purity, virginity, innocence just like a newborn child. In heraldry, white depicts faith and purity.

In Hindu mythology white is the colour of goddess bhramacharini signifying peace and purity. One must wear white to experience the feeling of inner peace and security. It is also considered to be a colour of knowledge, goddess saraswati is shown wearing a white saree sitting on a white lotus.

Popular culture

It is the color of fresh snow, chalk and milk, and is the opposite of black. White objects fully reflect and scatter all the visible wavelengths of light.

White is bright and can create a sense of space or add highlights. Designers often use the color white to make rooms seem larger and more spacious. Rooms painted completely white seem to be spacious, but empty and unfriendly at the same time.

The sheets we use to make notes are generally white, as this colour does not ask for much attention, the written matter gets highlighted and not the colour of the paper.

In advertising, white is associated with coolness and cleanliness because it's the color of snow. You can use white to suggest simplicity in high-tech products such as cars. White is an appropriate color for charitable organizations; angels are usually imagined wearing white clothes. White is associated with hospitals, doctors, and sterility, hence you can use white to suggest safety when promoting medical products. White is often associated with low weight, low-fat food, and dairy products.

In the ancient culture a bride wearing white was often thought to convey the bride's virginity. In Hindus it is considered the colour of mourning. Hindu widows wear white dress in the morning.

Positive Traits of white

White gives you a sense of hope, like it is the beginning of a new chapter, which fills you up with ideals of optimism. White is a colour on which even a slightest spot would leave a mark, hence a clean white acts as a marker of purity, simplicity and cleanliness. It is a symbol of innocence and peace like the dove (symbol of peace) is all white. Visually it gives a heightened perception of space. White also signifies building of faith and gives a sense of clarity in everything we do. The colour seems to be very giving and does not ask for much (attention). It is considered to be a colour of perfection.

Negative traits of white

Though it may seem to be a majestic colour, when in excess, it is linked to feelings of emptiness, and isolation. While white can give you peace and calm too much of it can lead to lethargy. White can also be associated with cold, heartless behavior, depicting an individual with no feelings. It implies detachment and disinterest in activities with little if any stimulation for the senses. When too much white is mixed with warm colours it makes them look garnish.
